This is one of my most favorite pieces of furniture. We bought it this past summer from a dear friend. She was having an estate sale and wanted to sell this piece, but still hesitant to part with it. We've been friends for over 40 years and knowing I thought it was a treasure she was happy for me to have it. This piece has a wonderful history. It was her great aunt's, her future husband had it made as his wedding gift to her. It has a lovely old finish, and I think you can see the beautiful hand carving on the front. It has two large drawers, one for silver and the other for linens. On each end there is a door that opens to a cupboard for china. Now for my dilemma...... My auntie had furniture like this piece and I always called it a side-boy, my husband calls it a sidecar (I don't know how he came up with this) and most people call it a buffet. Help, help ! What is it's true name?
I love to put seasonal pieces on my side-boy, sidecar, buffet. Right now I'm celebrating Valentine's Day. A little of this and that..... the Red Transferware my husband found a couple months ago at his favorite little Saturday flea market and the heart vase he found at a garage sale several years ago. Doesn't he find the neatest things? Thanks you honey.
Now back to my dilemma.........side-boy, sidecar, or buffet. What do you think???? Have a special day, hugs, Linda

Hi Linda, I've always heard them called a sideboard but what do I know? Maybe they have different names in different areas, like soda and pop. I am drooling oer your red transferware and all your pretty valentine goodies:>)
mine is called a buffet....and so was my mom's and her mom's. we're from baltimore, perhaps it's regional?
ah well.....a rose by any other name, right?
I myself call it a buffet table or sideboard, but I say call it whatever you want.
I've really enjoyed my visit to your blog.
Stop by sometime if you get a chance.
Susan
maybe it's one of those things that it depends where you come from as to what it is called. Here we call it either a buffet or sideboard.
How about you just call it 'beautiful'
Alison
Linda,
I call mine a sideboard.. but I say, call it whatever you want! I decorate mine seasonally as well..all of your Valentine's decorations are so pretty. I really love the red hobnail vase too - I have some white ones but I've never seen it in red! That's so nice that your husband looks out for your interests..mine too! I think we are lucky women..
Have a wonderful day enjoying your beautiful things.

Hi Linda,
I think it is called a sideboard or buffet.
It's very nice.
Love the Valentine pretties.

you made me curious because I wasn't sure. I looked in a dictionary and it said, ........
A sideboard is a piece of dining room furniture with a flat top, drawers, and cupboards to store tableware and linens.
A buffet is a sideboard. Hmmmm....
I'm not sure that is the last word.

Hey Linda, It is a beautiful piece. Growing up in Maine, we call it a side boy. Here in PA, we call it a buffet, So I quess it just depends where you were raised.
I think any answer is the correct one.
Dona
I call mine a buffet just because I put extra food on it when I have company. I love the idea to but valentine and other holiday things on it.What ever you call it it's beautiful!

I enjoy your blog. Thanks for sharing it. Lucy
Hi Linda,
I'd call it a buffet but that's just a guess. Regardless, it looks so charming and great for seasonal tablescapes. I love your Valentine's decor. Red and white are just so pretty. I love the transferware.

I do believe that it is a sideboard.... I googled it and found this......
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sideboard
but I am guessing that it has different names in different countries.......
however it is beautiful.......
First of all, it is beautiful! I usually call them a buffet, but have heard them called a sideboard as well.
:)
Sideboard is what the old folks called them. I think buffet is a newer name and some buffets have open shelves.
I say sideboard...or buffet.
It sure it pretty..and so are all your lil displays on top of it!
Hugs,
Robin
Linda,
It has always been a buffet in our part of the country....and I've heard them referred to as side boards...whatever you call it, it's beautiful and your husband is a great shopper.....
Thank you for visiting with me and commenting on my white bird figurine...Betty
Well, whatever it is called, it is very nice. I love the way you've displayed your pretty things on it.
I have heard both sideboard and buffet. As far as I know a sidecar is what hangs off the side of a motor cycle! lol Lovely treasures your husband found for you!
Amanda (aka Cottage Contessa)
My grandmother called hers a buffet! Your "sideboard" and "sidecar" words are more fun tho, brings a smile to one's face! I love your decor!
Katherine
I always thought it was sideboard buffet! thats what my grandma and mom call theres! But what do I know I just call mine something to store stuff in hahaha!
What ever it is called, it is just wonderful! I love the red transferware display you have on it now. I probably would call it a buffet...
Penny
I would call it a sideboard or buffet but as everyone else has already said, it's probably a regional thing and in any case, it's just beautiful!
I love the gorgeous red and pink glass .... had never come across it before.
I've heard it called a sideboard or buffet. It's lovely!
Well, I've heard both sideboard and buffet but never sidecar. I think it's a beautiful piece no matter what you call it!

Good Afternoon Linda,
Oh my goodness, your thingamajig, LOL, is so beautiful. I have one that belongs to my Mother and we call it a Buffet. I have never heard it called a Sideboy before tho. I guess people have different things to call it and it probably has to do with where they grew up at and what their parents or grandparents called it. I also have an antique china cabinet that belongs to my Mother as well. I'll have to take pictures of them someday and share them. Your Valentine's dishes and vase looks very beautiful on there. "THANK YOU" for sharing it with us. At Christmas, I had my villages on my buffet. Right now, I still have my Christmas Tins on there because I don't want them outside to collect moisture and rust. I may just keep them on there because I do love tins. Take care my friend and have a great day/weekend. May God Bless You and Yours. I'm going to wait and start back on my regular posting next week. Since my DH has been home, my schedule has been so out of whack.
Love & Hugs,
Karen H.
Lovely :)
I have heard them called sideboards or servers. As others have said, it probably depends on your part of the country.
Come back to my blog - you're a winner!
I call them buffets or sidebaords. Whatever you call it.....it's beautiful and beautifully decorated!
:0) Sharon
LOL I've never heard of sideboy or sidecar, I'd call it a buffet or sideboard myself but we sometimes have different names for things in Australia, lol!
Love the red transferware and they way you have it all set up, it's a beautiful .... sideboard/buffet/sideboy/sidecar.... so special to have that history behind it. I always wonder about old furniture, who made it, who bought it...
Hi Linda,
LoL.. well we aussies call it a sideboard but hey im leaning toward calling them sidecars now...i think thats just so funny and cute !
Any way you look at it its lovely and the fact that it has a history full of love is even better :)
Hugs,
Shannon
Hi Linda,
Thanks for stopping by! Your "piece of furniture" is wonderful! How lovely she handed it over to you.
Now, I'm going to confuse you here....but I've also heard them referred to as "butlers." LOL!
I agree with everyone else, it is probably regional. Here is a similar story...my DH and I grew up in separate states...but next to each other. He calls those things you put on ice cream sprinkles and I call them Jimmies.
See????? :0)
Good day Linda: I call your buffet a "sideboard" I think sideboard is used more here in the south for this kind of furniture. Whatever it's called, it sure is "purdy"!
Judy
I've heard these pieces called sideboards, Linda. It's decorated beautifully!
Pat
Hey, Linda! I have missed being in the blogging world! Thanks for the comment :)

Scattered Thoughts Of Mine
I'm thinking sideboard too? I am not expert. It is dang lovely though, that's for sure. Love, Esther
Whatever you want to call it...it's beautiful and your red transferware looks lovely displayed there. I grew up in the midwest and we called it a buffet...but I think a sideboard is correct as well.
Hi Linda,
My grandmas both had similar pieces and both called it a buffet. I agree it probably varies as to where you live; anyway it is beautiful! Deb
I would call it a sideboard or a buffet. As far as I know, a side car is a drink! LOL
Your H must be making drinks on it.
Hugs,
Nan
I've tagged you for a really fun and creative meme that's really easy. I hope you'll participate so I can enjoy your post about it.

Hi Linda. We call them sideboards or buffet in Australia. Sidecar, that is so unusual! We picture it to have wheels and to take off! lol What a treasure, love the way you have decorated it :) Jenn and Jacqui
We echo everyone else..we call it either a sideboard or a buffet! Whatever you call it...it is lovely!

Hi Linda,
Love your blog :) and your beautiful sideboard which is what we called them growing up in England. Now I am Canadian I call it a buffet LOL.
What a lucky girl having a husband who likes to shop flea markets, he had a good find with those beautiful dishes :)
Lynn
It is a sideboard or a buffet. A sidecar is an alcoholic drink! Ha, ha. Lovely piece of furniture.
In our area of West Texas, we have always called them buffets. I have heard them called sideboard but never have heard them called a sideCAR or a sideBOY. From what I can see, yours is very pretty. The red transferware is LOVELY.
Thanks for sharing....
